Vale chair and vice-chair get straight to business

The new chair and vice-chair of Vale of White Horse District Council have wasted no time in getting out and about as part of their duties.

Cllr Sally Povolotsky was named chair at the annual council meeting in May, while Cllr Kiera Bentley was named vice-chair.

And the pair have immediately got down to businesses, getting out and about around the district.

Both attended a sports awards ceremony organised by GLL, which is our leisure contractor and run the Better Leisure facilities in the Vale.

Sally spoke to students at Abingdon Preparatory School about democracy and local government, helping them understand what politics means and why their voice is important.

In Upton, Sally went to cheer on the starters at the annual Upton-no-good bike ride. Run by volunteers from Upton village and the local mountain bike fraternity, it is a fundraising event for local projects and causes.

As part of Great Big Green Week, Sally attended the Hendred Environment Group Plant Giveaway and Kiera received bee friendly seed bombs after visiting Faringdon’s Green Day.

Politics was on the agenda at Harwell Parish Hall as Sally watched No Prime Minister – a play written and performed by local residents.

A trip to the Bothy Vineyard was also on the agenda to enjoy a nature walk with Cllr Jill Rayner and local parish councillors to look at how we can make and create more spaces for biodiversity and sharing the Vales brilliant “Let it Bee” project.

On Sunday (25 June), Sally met players and organisers at Hendred Tennis Club in East Hendred before enjoying the Beacon Open Day in Wantage.

She said: “I’ve really enjoyed the chance to get out and about, meeting some amazing people and organisations that are doing great work in the district.

“It is one of the brilliant perks of being chair and I’m looking forward to discovering more about our amazing district.”

Kiera added: “From award winners to wines, it’s been a whirlwind start to the council year and I’ve loved every minute of it.

“We’d really like to speak to more young people and make sure their voices are heard so please get in touch if you can help.”
