Work starts on installing EV chargers

Work will begin on the Park and Charge Electric Vehicle charging scheme in Wantage next week.

The scheme proposes a total of up to 62 new charging points in car parks across the Vale of White Horse district – which are still to be confirmed.

Engineers are scheduled to begin installing electric chargers at Portway car park in Wantage on Monday (24 January). This will involve several bays being fenced off temporarily and some disruption to the car park at the entrance from Portway.

We will announce the work at other car parks in the Vale shortly and all work is due to be completed by the end of March.

This project is part of a county-wide scheme to install hundreds of EV charging points in council-owned car parks. More info here.

The Park and Charge scheme allows residents without off-street parking to park overnight and charge up using a ‘fast’ 7 – 22kw EV charging point. The chargers will also provide much needed battery top-ups to commuters and visitors during the daytime.

Councillor Catherine Webber, Vale of White Horse District Council Cabinet member for the Environment and Climate Emergency, said: “This is exciting news for Wantage, the Vale and beyond. These are designed to help those wishing to switch to EVs but who live in town centres and have on-street parking which can make it difficult to access charging. Knowing work is beginning means more people can make the switch to cleaner travel.”
