Cooling towers and evaporative condensers
Anybody who has control of a premises in Vale of White Horse District Council has a duty under the ‘Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992’ to notify us in writing with details of ‘notifiable devices’.
‘Notifiable devices’ consist of cooling towers and evaporative condensers, except when they contain water that is not exposed to the air and the water and electricity supply are not connected.
The main purpose of these regulations is to prevent legionellosis (including legionnaires disease) and to help in any investigation of outbreaks. Such systems need careful management to prevent the growth of legionella bacteria which can cause legionnaires disease if the bacteria are dispersed in the air and then inhaled. Regular checks of registered premises must be carried out to ensure that the necessary controls and monitoring are in place.
You must notify us if:
- you have a cooling tower or evaporative condenser or
- the registered details of the cooling tower or evaporative condenser changes,
You must register with us regardless of whether the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 is enforced by Local Authority or Health and Safety Executive (HSE) at your premises.
We will make the registration information available to the HSE where they are the enforcing authority for the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
